After many decades in the shadows, it is now okay for ordinary people to sport tattoos again. For a long time only punks and gangsters had tattoos, but in the last few years Hollywood stars have been popularizing these beautiful body art. Many of these modern tattoos are small and elegant - Sanskrit tattoo designs, Celtic cross tattoos, rose and flower tattoos, etc.

Whether or not you are spiritual and religious, whether or not you love art and history, Sanskrit tattoo designs are always an interesting topic for discussion. Sanskrit is an ancient language, originally used for the Hindu religion. It has been conclusively dated back to at least 1500 BC. Due to its religious origins, there are many famous and historically important religious texts and divine mythologies in Sanskrit. Among these is one of the oldest surviving and complete religious works, the Rig Veda. The Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad-gita are famous epic poems which record the great deeds of the Hindu Gods and ancient heroes. Besides the Hindu religion, the Buddhist religion also uses Sanskrit (a version called Pali).

Before you talk to your tattoo artist, make sure you know what you are talking about. You say you want a Japanese tattoo, but what do you know about Japanese characters? You need a quick stint in 2-minute Japanese boot camp.

Yes. A tattooing procedure using bamboo. I came across a website from Thailand that offers  unique ink jobs done not with tattoo machines but with bamboo sticks. Here's the gist..

Very fine needles are firmly attached to the end of a thin piece of bamboo using cotton. Usually 5 needles are used in this process but this can vary according to tattoo type and size. The needles are put in a line instead of a round bullet so that a very fine line can be achieved. This is then gently tapped into the skin.

Polynesia is a general term which meant many islands with its present day geographical territory at the triangular corners of Hawaii, New Zealand and the Eastern Island. It has a clear division among itself and comprises of east and west Polynesia with Cook Island and the Tahiti being the primary ones. The cultural aspect which dominated the Polynesian people was body art or decoration.

This practice of body art among the Polynesian people slowly spread among the European sailors before creating a major impact on the western society in the form of tattoo. Tattoo is a permanent ink marking into the skin layers which changes the pigmentation and it’s done mostly for decorative reasons. Although tattooing has faced much taboo but it still continues to be a globally acclaimed popular art.

Tattoos have served several purposes like status symbol or rank of an individual, symbols of spiritual and religious devotion, talismans or as a mark of an outcast, slaves or convicts. Nowadays tattoos are mostly used for cosmetic reasons or for showing some kind of emotional or remembrance gesture. The dyes and pigments used for tattooing are materials like titanium dioxide and iron oxide or for that matter even carbon black, azo dyes, acridine or even quinoline.

Tattoos are often grouped by the theme, the most prevalent among them being alien, ambigram, anchor, extreme, Maori, tribal or flash tattoos. However there are others like Aztec, kanji, eye and gargoyle. Using a paper or cardboard for imprinting or drawing a design is the sole theme of tattoo flash and it may be regarded as a species of industrial design. Tattoo parlours often sport them on the walls or on the entrance gateway giving the prospective customers a vivid idea of the tattoos. Mostly found on an 11*14 inch print, it may or may not come with an outline. Some common flash symbols are anchor, Bettie page which is a symbol of beauty, barbed wire, heart, dragon or the carp fish which appears in traditional Chinese or Japanese legends and stories. Maoris are the original inhabitants of New Zealand and with them comes the word Maori tattoo which has withstood not only time but also colonization by the Europeans. These Maori tattoos or tatuaggi maori were a symbol of genealogy, tribal history and often marks of beauty or ferocity.

Sometimes called Ta Moko it was mostly a facial form of tattoo though the global surge in the tattoo industry and the urge to be fashionable has made people wear them on all parts of the body. It wasn’t merely worn by the person in the ink form but predominantly the skin was chiseled for this purpose. Old tribes like the Celtic, Haida and the tribe of Borneo practiced this form of tribal tattoo or tatuaggi tribali. New tribalism is the remnants of the glorious past which has been traced back to the Bronze Age. They mainly demonstrate pieces of art form from native and indigenous tribe with an inclination towards personal or religious convictions. For its unique look tribal tattoo has become one of the most popular designs with celebrities like Mike Tyson, Sandra Bullock and Dwayne Johnson donning them.

This once dying art of the Polynesians have now become a fashion statement and many style icons are hugely acknowledged due to the bold and beautiful tattoo they wear on them differentiating them from the rest.

A major transformation is now completed. The worlds’ most famous doll is now officially inked. Or should I say, “The oldest teenager in the world” now entered in the realm of tattoos.

Barb Gurl

Mattel the manufacturer of Barbie offers a range of 40 tats to disfigure Barbie’s beautiful clear skin, including a strategically designed tramp stamp which declares her love for Ken. Barbie and Ken broke up on Valentine's Day in 2004 after being together more than 43 years.

Barbie is 50 years old and her full name is Barbie Millicent Roberts.

Her first boyfriend, Ken, was brought out two years after Barbie herself in 1961 and was named after the son of Mattel founders Ruth and Elliot Handler.

Barbie, the world’s most infamous celebrity blonde is approaching 50; and like many of her middle-aged friends, Barbie is desperately trying to reinvent herself as a celebrity bad girl with tattoos. We know that Madonna is the master of “reinvention” but not anymore… Right Barbie?

Barbie has lived an ageless life since she first graced us with her presence in 1959.  Her savvy fashion trends, fabulously long golden blond hair, and an unrealistic fit, trim body are some of her attributes that earned her celebrity status as America’s everything girl icon.  But it seems the years are catching up with Barbie and she is discovering she is not nearly as cool and hip as she used to be.  Barbie, now older, tattooed, and less of an icon is extremely nervous about her future celebrity status.

But all of this isn’t making Barbie become a girl that retreats to her Dream House to soothe her woes; no Barbie is working hard, perhaps too hard to get back in with the cool crowd.

Barbie Millicent Roberts is one girl who is not afraid to change.  Over the past 49 years, Barbie has had 75 careers including rock star, astronaut, and presidential candidate.  Barbie is one Baby Boomer who has definitely experienced her share of highs and lows.

1997 was a particularly hard year for Barbie in terms of celebrity media and controversy.  Then in her 40’s, Barbie got a butterfly tattoo on her stomach, as an attempt to stay hip and cool.

But it didn’t take long for Barbie’s tattoos to take off and brand her name (the word Barbie) as a derogatory term meaning girl or woman considered shallow.  The term “Barbie” exploded as an Urban Slang word with the release of 1997 pop song “Barbie Girl.”

In 1999, rumors spread of Barbie’s intentions of hanging out with new friends with trendy tattoos, nose rings, and extra body piercings.  Then the peer pressure got to Barbie, and as a result she underwent plastic surgery transformation.  Barbie had her waistline increased in size in order to have a less perfect figure, which others would view as a more realistic, average body shape.

Barbie became an outlaw in part of the World in 2003.   Denounced as a symbol of depravity of the perverted West, with her revealing clothes, tattoos, and shameful postures Barbie was banned by Saudi Arabia’s religious police and forbidden from the kingdom.

The 2004 announcement of Barbie’s split with Ken; longtime boyfriend of 43 years came as a shock to many, but like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance had come to an end. And while Barbie admits the breakup was a painful time of great heartache, she also jokes about being glad she decided on a butterfly tattoo instead of a tattoo of Ken’s name.  Apparently having to go through tattoo removal to remove a tattoo of “Ken’s” name would have been much more painful than the breakup.

In 2006, Barbie ranked as No. 43 on the list of 101 “Most Influential People.” Among the list of fictitious cultural icons in myths, legends, television, and movies that have impacted, shaped, and changed society were Buffy the Vampire Slayer (No. 44), Batman (No. 60), Cinderella (No. 26), Santa Claus (No. 4), Luke Skywalker (No. 85), Mickey Mouse (No. 18), G.I. Joe (No. 48) and Barbie (No. 43).

But the more Barbie seems to slip in popularity, the harder Barbie searches for ways to reinvent herself before turning 50 years old.

Barbie has always been the responsible, smart, girl-next-door type. The popular cheerleader, prom queen or farmer’s daughter any boy would be proud to bring home to meet his parents.  Barbie’s latest debut has her looking as though she has hit her all time low.  Wearing fishnet stockings, a motorcycle jacket, black gloves, tattoos, and boots Black Canary Barbie is definitely a new hard look, that is sure to create another derogatory stereotype for this bewildered, age-old, ageless celebrity icon woman.

Hopefully, Barbie’s three younger sisters, Skipper, Stacie, and Kelly have the good sense not to follow in the same footsteps of their older sister, and avoid provocative tasteless tattoos and trashy clothing.

Tattoo In Retrospect

The word, Tattoo, comes from the Polynesian word, “tatao” which means “to tap” or “to mark something.”

Captain James Cook introduced this word to the English during his voyage around the world in 1769. Captain Cook and his crew of the ship, The Endeavour, were welcomed with open arms by the friendly and uninhibited Tahitians (yeah, that means many of them were naked.) Since the weather was very warm on the island, clothing was optional.

The Tahitians tried to look their best by decorating their bodies. But the fact of the matter was the application of tattoos, which was painful. It was done by dipping a sharp-pointed comb into lampblack and then hammering it into the skin. Nonetheless, everybody did it.

As word of tattooing in Tahiti and other Polynesian islands spread, the European sailors began to get tattooed themselves. This probably illustrated why tattoos were looked upon with such a lack of credibility in the early days and were considered as a kind of thing suitable for drunkards, sailors and criminals.

Modern archeology has uncovered the practice of tattoos in many ancient cultures all over the world.

In 1992, in the Alps between the border of Austria and Italy, a perfectly preserved body of a man was found. He was estimated to have lived 5,000 years ago! And he had 58 tattoos all over his body. That tattooed man was named Otzi.

Mummies from the ancient Egyptians had tattoos.

Clay figurines found in Japan dated 3,000 years ago were engraved with tattoo marks.

The ancient Greeks and Romans used tattoos to identify slaves and criminals.

But tattooing has only become acceptable in the mainstream society recently. Tattoo shops and parlors were nothing more than wretched hives of scum and villainy, located in the seediest parts of most towns have undergone significant changes.

Tattooing has really become popular with sports athletes. No one can forget the now-retired flamboyant NBA forward, Dennis Rodman, whose body was a tattooing canvas. A more current example is Allen Iverson of the Philly 76'ers. The tattooing trend is getting really popular in college basketball. And the trickle-down effect is appearing on high school athletes. Some old-fashion coaches forbidden any display of tattoos which meant some basketball players has to play with a t-shirt under their game jersey. Football fans can't miss the barbed wire tattoos on the well-developed arms of football players.

The popular show, “Miami Ink,” from TLC is a reality-based show. The show’s popularity demonstrates just how mainstream the art of body art or “inking” has become. And it gives the viewers a look into the skill and history of both the artists and their custom
